Audi has unveiled the all-new A5, which brings a surprising change to its lineup. This new model is not the two-door coupe you might be expecting but instead replaces the A4 as Audi's compact executive saloon.
Coupe No More
Designed to compete with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, the A5 is available in both sedan and estate versions. Audi has also introduced the high-performance S5 variant.
Evolution in Design and Exclusively ICE-Powered
In line with Audi's new naming structure, the A5 range is exclusively powered by internal combustion engines, with even numbers reserved for electric models. This means an A4 e-tron will be introduced later as a rival to the BMW i4.
Though traditionally known as a sporty coupe or luxurious cabriolet, the A5 now stands as Audi's latest compact executive saloon, also available as an Avant estate. The front design of the new A5 is more of an evolution than a revolution, with a more steeply curved bonnet, modern headlights, and a wider grille giving it a more imposing look
Sleek Design Features
Standard models feature 17-inch alloy wheels, while the S-Line and S5 versions come with 19-inch wheels. Optional 20-inch alloys are also available. Flush-fitting door handles add to the sleek and aerodynamic appearance of the new A5. At the rear, the A5 resembles the Audi Q6 e-tron SUV, especially with its stylish full-width light bar. The real exhaust tips are a welcome improvement over the fake trims seen on the outgoing A4.
For those opting for the sportier Audi S5, distinctive styling changes include a deeper, more aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes, unique alloy wheel designs, and quad tailpipes.
Engine Options and Performance
The A5 offers a range of petrol and diesel engines, all paired with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. There is no all-electric version yet, with the Audi A4 e-tron set to fill that role in the future. Entry-level models feature a 2.0 litre petrol engine with 110kW and front-wheel drive or a 150kW all-wheel-drive version. Select markets will also offer a mild-hybrid 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine with a 48-volt electrical system. This provides 150kW of power and 400Nm of torque, with an additional 18kW of boost for increased performance.
The standout option is the new Audi S5, equipped with a 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine, producing 270kW. While this is slightly less than the BMW M340i, Audi has not yet disclosed the 0-100km/h time for the S5, so performance comparisons will have to wait.
Advanced Interior Technology
Inside, the new Audi A5 shares many features with the Q6 e-tron, thanks to the "Digital Stage" infotainment system. This system includes an 11.9-inch digital driver’s display and a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system within a large, curved panel on the dashboard. An optional 10.9-inch passenger screen allows the front passenger to stream videos on the go.
The interior design marks a significant improvement over the outgoing A4, with a more modern aesthetic featuring a sweeping dash and ambient lighting. The S5 version includes sporty seats and an S-specific steering wheel.
South African Launch
Audi South Africa has confirmed the launch of the new sporty A5 sedan in mid-2025, while the A5 Avant's local introduction remains unconfirmed. Pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the launch date. Stay tuned for updates.
