Fresh Design and Enhanced Dimensions

Scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2024, the new BMW 1 Series – with its F70 model code – is officially the fourth generation of this iconic hatchback. Sporting a unique grille design with vertical and diagonal bars, the new 1 Series measures 4,361 mm from bumper to bumper, making it 42 mm longer than its predecessor. It stands 25 mm taller at 1,459 mm, with an unchanged wheelbase of 2,670 mm. The boot capacity is a generous 380 litres, expandable to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Engine Line-Up for South Africa

BMW Group South Africa has confirmed that South Africa will get the front-wheel-drive 118 and the all-wheel-drive M135 xDrive, with the 120 expected to join the lineup in 2025. All models will come with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard. Local output figures are still under wraps though. And no, the naming convention is not a spelling mistake. BMW's new naming strategy discontinues the "i" suffix for petrol powered models, apparently designating it exclusively for fully electric vehicles.

Power and Performance of the M135

The M135 xDrive is naturally the star of the show, with its turbocharged 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder engine. In Europe, this engine produces 221 kW and 400 Nm, but the South African version is expected to deliver a full 233 kW, maintaining the same torque. This means an 8 kW increase over the outgoing M135i, though it loses 50 Nm of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 kph is achieved in a blistering 4.9 seconds.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the new BMW 1 Series is all about sustainability and tech. The cabin is “completely leather-free as standard,” offering options like leather-like materials and upholstery made from recycled polyester. The redesigned gear selector and the latest BMW Curved Display, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen, make the cockpit a tech lover’s dream. Air conditioning controls have also gone fully digital, adding to the modern feel - for better or for worse.

Conclusion

The new BMW 1 Series hatchback is set to make a big splash in South Africa later this year. With its fresh design, powerful engine options, and cutting-edge technology, it’s seemingly ready to take on the competition. Keep your eyes peeled for this exciting launch.
