Volkswagen has unveiled its latest high-performance Golf R, marking a significant leap in the hot hatch segment.
Performance and Power
At the heart of the new Golf R is a potent 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, now producing an impressive 245 kW and 420 Nm of torque, representing a 10 kW increase over its predecessor. The power is channelled through a 7-speed DSG transmission and Volkswagen's advanced 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with R-Performance Torque Vectoring. While the standard top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, an optional R-Performance package pushes this to 270 km/h. Volkswagen claims the 0-100km/h sprint time takes 4.6 seconds when using launch control.
Upgraded Technology Inside
Inside, the Golf R 8.5 boasts a suite of upgraded technology. A new 12.9-inch infotainment system takes centre stage, offering a larger display, revised menu layout, and improved graphics. The digital dashboard has also been enhanced, now incorporating a GPS lap timer and G-Force measurement. No escaping the AI buzzword over here either with voice control functionality now expanded with ChatGPT connectivity, with the slightly infamous climate control system seeing improvements as well.
Golf R Black Edition
Volkswagen also revealed the Golf R Black Edition, featuring darkened exterior elements and standard R-Performance package as standard. The R-Performance package adds Drift and Special driving modes, a larger roof spoiler, and additional performance features.
Conclusion
While the Golf R 8.5 is set to go on sale immediately in Europe, availability in South Africa remains uncertain. Volkswagen South Africa has yet to confirm the arrival of the performance Golf models, including the highly anticipated Golf 8.5 GTI.
