Volkswagen's electrification efforts are branching out with the expansion of its GTX performance lineup.
What is GTX?
The GTX badge first appeared on the ID.4, signifying a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup for increased power and a sportier driving character. Volkswagen is now expanding this formula into more models, with the ID.5 GTX becoming the latest model to receive the sporty treatment.
More Power, More Grip
A key upgrade offered by the GTX models is the addition of a second electric motor driving the front wheels. This unlocks a total output of 220 kW and significantly more torque compared to the regular rear-drive ID.4 and ID.5 models. This, coupled with the instant response of dual electric motors, promises sharper acceleration and increased all-weather grip thanks to the all-wheel-drive system.
Subtle Sporty Styling
Differentiating the GTX models from their standard counterparts are unique visual cues. These include sportier bumpers, a black roof, distinctive alloy wheel designs, and red interior accents. While not drastically altering the design, these touches aim to give the GTX duo a more purposeful and athletic stance.
ID Lineup Expansion
The introduction of the GTX models further diversifies the ID. lineup. With a blend of performance and practicality, they could appeal to a segment of the South African market craving an electric experience with a dash of extra sportiness.
South African Outlook
While the local arrival of the GTX variants isn't guaranteed, considering recent efforts to expand the ID range internationally, it's not impossible that South Africans could see these sportier EVs on our roads in the future. Their success in other markets could further pave the way for an electric Volkswagen lineup locally.
